How Takumi Minamino's Liverpool debut could be very explosive due to Premier League rule

Minamino could follow in the footsteps of Virgil van Dijk and make his debut in the Merseyside derby

Takumi Minamino could follow in the footsteps of Virgil van Dijk and make his Liverpool debut against Everton.

Liverpool are confident of concluding a deal for the Japanese international , with personal terms and a medical not expected to be an issue.

Minamino will become a Liverpool player on January 1 - but he will not be allowed to play in the Reds' Premier League clash with Sheffield United the following day.

Premier League rules state that players signed on January 1 or 2 are not allowed to play that matchweek, but will instead be available the following game.
That means Minamino will have to sit out the clash with the Blades but can play in the FA Cup third round clash with Everton on January 5.

Van Dijk made his debut in the same game after arriving in a £75m deal from Southampton in January 2018, and the Dutchman would score a late winner in front of the Kop to mark a perfect debut.

Minamino will hope to do the same should he get the nod from his manager against the Blues.
