Three reasons klopp and Liverpool abandoned interest in Ajax sensation Matthijs de Ligt

De Ligt was Vital in Ajax best season in Europe and was crucial in their route to the Champions League semi-final.

The 19-year-old after helping Ajax secure the Dutch League, is being targeted by some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Barcelona and Manchester United.

Also, United are in the market for a centre-back as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to rebuild his squad.

As expected, Klopp’s Liverpool have also been linked with a move as they look to close the gap on Premier League champions Manchester City.

Although reports are suggesting that the Reds aren’t ready to splash out this summer, others sources claim that Klopp was looking to pair De Ligt with international team-mate Virgil van Dijk.

But according to the Evening Standard, Liverpool have given up on their pursuit for three key reasons.

Firstly, they’re put off by De Ligt’s mammoth transfer fee.

“Klopp did not want the signing of De Ligt to impact Gomez’s progress.”

Ajax are believed to be demanding £61m for the centre-back.

And after spending £75m on Van Dijk and a further £67m on goalkeeper Alisson, Liverpool are not able to justify another huge fee on a defender.

Van Dijk spent much of the season partnered by either Joel Matip or Dejan Lovren.

Joe Gomez was first choice in the early stages of the campaign before he was ruled out with injury.
