Former Dortmund Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan says his team is struggling from “negative events” during the title run-in.
Five weeks is all that is remaining, in the top-flight season to go and any slip could prove crucial for either side. However, as it stands, Manchester City looks like the weakest following their display last night.
With Liverpool seeking a first championship since 1990, it’s hard to see room for lapses.
City’s hopes of Champions League glory suffered a major setback when they were beaten 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur.
And Gundogan admits City, was undone by Heung-min Son’s late strike, adding that the team is adversely affected by the result.
“Negative events like that always set us back far too much,” he said. “Had we scored from the penalty we’d have taken Tottenham apart.
“But instead we withdrew from the game. That must not happen to a big team. That’s why we’re not there yet.”
Speaking to Sky Deutschland, Gundogan added: “We were not brave enough in the game and we made a lot of simple mistakes.
“I have the feeling we are nervous in important Champions League games. We always make the wrong decisions.
“In these matches we always want to do something special because it means (going through to the) Champions League semi-finals. Sometimes less is more.”
“negative activities like that always set far behind too alot,” he stated. “had we scored from the penalty we would have ripped tottenham apart.
“however rather we withdrew from the match. This is not suppose to be for a big team. that is why we’re not there but.”
Speaking of Sky Sports he said : “we were no longer courageous enough in the match and we made numerous easy mistakes.
“i’ve the feeling we’re fearful in important champions league games. we always make the wrong decisions.
“in these matches we usually need to do something unique as it manner (going through to the) champions league semi-finals. on occasion much less is more.”
More devastating injury news also hit the team after, key midfielder David Silva sustained an ankle injury last night.
He is expected to be miss a handful of games, if not till end of season.
